Discover Fox & Monocle Cafe

Walking into Fox & Monocle Cafe for the first time at 2300 Canoe Cove Rd #3, North Saanich, BC V8L 3X9, Canada, feels like discovering a neighborhood secret that locals quietly protect. I stopped in on a misty morning before a ferry run, and within minutes it was obvious why people linger here longer than planned. The room hums with low conversation, mugs clink softly, and the smell of fresh coffee sets the pace for the day.

What stands out immediately is how intentional everything feels. The menu doesn’t try to overwhelm you. Instead, it focuses on well-executed breakfast and lunch staples with thoughtful twists. I ordered their house-made breakfast sandwich, and you can tell the process matters: eggs cooked to order, bread toasted just enough to hold together, and ingredients that taste fresh rather than mass-produced. This lines up with data from the Canadian Restaurant Association, which notes that diners increasingly value quality ingredients and simple preparation over oversized menus. You feel that philosophy in every plate here.

Coffee is clearly a point of pride. The baristas talk about beans the way chefs talk about produce. On one visit, I watched them dial in espresso shots with a scale and timer, adjusting grind size between pulls. That attention to method mirrors best practices recommended by the Specialty Coffee Association, which emphasizes consistency and precision for flavor clarity. The result is a cup that’s smooth, balanced, and never bitter, whether you’re ordering a classic drip or a velvety latte.

Beyond the food and drinks, the cafe’s role in the community adds another layer. Regulars greet staff by name, and visitors often ask for recommendations on nearby spots. According to Statistics Canada, small independent cafes play a key role in local economies by encouraging walk-in traffic and repeat visits, and this place is a textbook example. It’s not just somewhere to eat; it’s where conversations start and plans get made.

Reviews across platforms echo this experience. Many mention the friendly service and relaxed pace, which is refreshing in an era where meals can feel rushed. One reviewer described the cafe as cozy but confident, and that phrasing sticks because it captures the balance perfectly. Still, it’s fair to note a limitation: during peak weekend hours, seating can be tight. The space isn’t huge, so patience helps, though turnover is steady and staff communicate wait times clearly.

Location-wise, being near Canoe Cove makes it a natural stop for travelers and locals alike. Whether you’re fueling up before a ferry or winding down after a coastal walk, the cafe fits easily into the rhythm of North Saanich. The consistency of service and food quality suggests solid management practices, aligning with guidance from organizations like FoodSafe BC that stress training and process as foundations for trust.

Each visit reinforces the same impression: this is a place built on care, not shortcuts. From the way orders are handled to how plates are presented, there’s a sense of pride that can’t be faked. If you value a thoughtfully crafted menu, reliable coffee, and an atmosphere that invites you to slow down, this cafe delivers without trying too hard.

  • A lovely restaurant by the marina that friends took us to. The food was great, two of us had the cod with gnocchi with a cream sauce that was delicious. Another had the bison sausage and mashed potatoes and the other person had the stuffed chicken. Everyone were impressed with their meals. For dessert we shared a tart tartine that was made fresh and it was outstanding. The server was attentive and helpful. This restaurant is worth visiting.

  • 10/10! My husband and I go every Saturday morning for a latte and a baked good. Friendly staff, great service, cozy marina views. So good that we actually asked the owner Tracie to bake our gender reveal cake and it was absolutely perfect! In the evening, the cafe turns into a restaurant with the best food in town.

  • While we chose it on a whim, this turned out to be an absolutely fabulous meal. Starting with cocktails, which were superlative in being both balanced and delicious, our whole experience was wonderful. We started with Sourdough and the Chicken Liver Pate, both of which were delicious. My wife is a big brioche fan, and the butter toasted brioche that comes with the pate had her eyes rolling back in her head, to say nothing of the pate itself. Meanwhile, I was sipping on my second extra spicy Cracked Monocle margarita, perhaps the best drink I’ve had in years. Our mains were the pork tenderloin, and the rockfish. Both came out prepared impeccably, and had great flavor. We ended our meal with desserts made in house by their very talented pastry chef, the pistachio cake, plum and pecan tart, and the chocolate mousse cake. All the sweet treats were delicious, balanced and sweet without being overly so. Overall we loved this meal, and cannot recommend this cute little restaurant highly enough.

  • A fabulous place with very good food and service. Dogs are allowed in the patio, the atmosphere and the cuisine all give it European vibes which is rather rare in North America. I’ve been told the chef studied in England, that might explain it. We’ll be back, cheers!

  • My partner and I decided to visit the Fox & Monocle on our way back to Vancouver. We were running late for our reservation, so I called the restaurant, and they gladly accommodated our request to move it. After we arrived, everything went smoothly. The servers were friendly, and I really appreciated that the restaurant was bright, you could clearly see the food you ordered and the faces of people around you. As vegetarians, we were happy to find that the chef was willing to modify a few dishes from the main menu to suit our dietary needs. We especially enjoyed the mushroom tart and the risotto. My Old Fashioned cocktail was excellent, and the rosé recommended by our server was surprisingly good. We’re glad we had the chance to visit this restaurant. Wishing them continued success and keep up the great work!

  • Whether you are visiting early in the day for coffee and a pastry or later for a dinner, you can’t go wrong. Most places that try to do it all miss the mark on both. Not the fox! Top notch coffee, excellent pastries (quiche, breakfast sandwich and cinnamon rolls are our favourite) are perfect for breakfast and their local, well executed elevated dishes are an amazing dinner. A definite must visit!

  • Stopped in for coffee and a pastry on a recommendation from a family member. We had the tomato gallette and a lemon cake and both were superb. Coffee was fantastic and staff were super great. Highly recommended!
